Awakened – Background
Awakened. It was actually kind of surprising and exciting that it’s became my best selling song. Awakened was actually the first song I put together. It definitely holds a special place in my heart. I finished the first draft of it when I was 16. I did it in my bedroom with the first piece of software I learned how to use. It was kinda amazing how it just came together. I put together a random beat, and wrote the rhodes thingy… then the piano thingy… and it just kind of came together. The last part of the song “rain rain down rain down your love” came after the rest of the song.
The song has had many meanings to many people, and I don’t want to ruin any of that for anyone. I’m stoked if people find many meanings and many intricate parallels between life and God and the songs and music. Awesome! For me though, the song is a journey of discovering God – who He is and what He loves. It moves from a place of simple surrender to a thought of God always loving me… to a response of wanting to be awakened into the knowledge of His love. Into the full life, with God at the head of everything. It was the first real journey I had with the Lord. He took me from a place of knowledge into a place of intimacy and this is the result of it.
I’m stoked that people are encountering the Lord and his love through this song. It’s totally honoring for God to use songs I’ve had the joy of writing in that way.
I’d love for you to share how this song’s impacted you. I’ve heard a lot of amazing stories about people listening to this. I’m sure everyone would love hearing about it! Drop a story or two!
Ian
I really love the piano “thingy” in this song! The part “rain rain down, rain down your love” is my favourite part, it still gives me goosebumps all over and opens my heart for more of God. I always experience God’s presence strongly as I listen to that part.
Keep writing and pour your heart out before God – it’s given me loads of blessings this far!
Hey. Yeah, this song is great, I could just feel God. I like that it has so few words, we talk to much at God anyway.
When I read the post about it, it made me smile so much. I happen to be 16 and I just finished a full draft of my first song. My friends and worship leader ask me about it and I don’t know what to say. I just can’t explain how it came together or where it came from. I read this and you wrote, “He took me from a place of knowledge into a place of intimacy and this is the result of it.” That was exactly what happened to me. Thanks for helping me out with the words!
This song really made me realize that you can really worship God creatively through music! And it inspired me so much I started making my own music with my keyboard and synths and stuff. Of course it’s not as good as yours (because I’m just using a midi keyboard), but regardless, I’m putting my energy into fashioning creative music that gives glory to God alone!
This CD also is what eventually led me to completely give up listening to secular music, because I figured, if God made music to praise him, then I’m going against what he wants by listening to music that doesn’t give him glory. So thank you so much Ian for releasing what God has given you and being such a blessing on people’s lives, cuz you’ve definitely made a huge impact on mine =)
p.s. I put in the link to my music myspace, you can check it out if you’d like ;)
